Review:
The credits of the movie should go like this – Director: Aziz Mirza; Ghost director-Sharukh Khan. Judging by Aziz bhai’s past films, namely ‘Yes Boss’ and ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’. P.B.D.H.H. is a letdown. It has generated a lot of hype but falls short of expectations.
Shahrukh KhanThe film is good in patches so we cannot write it off completely. Shahrukh has star appeal that the producers must be banking on to fill the theatres. Shahrukh’s fans will like the film as he plays the role of a TV reporter to perfection. The songs and high production values are other big draws for this film.
Ajay Bakshi (Shahrukh Khan) is a sauve, stylish, flirtatious and brave reporter (He climbs a 20 storey tower to cover the diffusing of a bomb). T.V. reporter working for K-TV. The coolest place one can imagine showing babes and hunks in designer clothes on the dance floor that will put many discotheques to shame. The channel is owned by Kakaji (Satish Shah), he cajoling puttar Ajay with jazzy cars. Galaxy TV owned by KC Chinoy (Dilip Tahil) is desperate to boost its flagging TRP’s, so hires a femme fatale Riya Banerjee ( Juhi Chawla ) who is very smart and her handy-cam comes quite handy at times. Jay goes bonkers over Ria and tries to woo her. Both share a love-hate relationship and believe that they are the best.
Elections are round the corner hence chief minister Mushran (Govind Namdeo) and opposition leader Ramakant Dua (Shakti Kapoor) rope in both channels to campaign for them. We have a flurry of press meetings and padyatras, the spin-doctors start functioning. In all this melee a common man Mohan Joshi (Paresh Rawal) avenges the rape of his daughter by Maganlal Dua’s brother by executing him.
A Bumbling don Pappu junior (Jonny Lever) who is desperate for publicity kidnaps Mohan Joshi to boost his dreary image. Ajay and Ria join hands and decide to save the common man.
The subsequent part becomes pathetically patriotic and we have a drab lecture on nationalism and a whole flurry of Tirangas marching down the street.
The film is a spoof on current national scenario and brilliantly portrays the nexus between politics and media. It also highlights the way the media people clamour for publicity and money for eg. Execution of Mohan Joshi is turned into a Mike Tyson bout.
The comical part is very well done thanks to Johny Lever and Satish Shah. The film reminds one of Main Azad Hoon, which was also of similar theme.
Juhi Chawla & Shahrukh KhanShahrukh here is a T.V. reporter after playing a radio jockey in Dil Se.He is quite good but that’s the way he always is. Chawla is chirpy and has a run of the mill role. Johny Lever and Satish Shah are quite successful in tickling the funny bone. Paresh Rawal is splendid which proves that he is a directors’ baby.
Cinematography is splendid and all songs in the movie have been choreographed like music videos. All in all an entertaining movie with a heavy dose of patriotism, which made it a trifle melodramatic.
