Review:
David Dhawan must have asked writer Rumi Jaffery to write a script based on the age-old * boy-meets-girl-during-a-journey * plot . Add a bunch of poor actors , utterly boring ‘humour’(????) cocky stunts and we have DULHAN HUM LE JAYENGE .
Karishma Kapoor has three overbearing and quirky ‘Mamaji’s (in Hindi it means brothers of mother) who have made her life a prison . Om Puri is a health freak , Paresh Rawal is all for religion , tradition and pooja-paath , Anupam Kher is the disco-savvy up-to-date (He says so in the movie) old dude who wears a false wig to cover his bald pate . Karishma runs away from home to go on a Europe tour (Why Europe ? No reasons are given) . There she meets Salman and they fall in love after much bickering . Now Salman has to convince the three uncles to let him marry Karishma .
Salman needs no excuse to take off his shirt – he does it anywhere ; in the middle of the highway in broad daylight , on the rail tracks , everywhere . His acting skills are limited to that . Karishma is strictly OK . Everyone else is wasted . Satish Kaushik shows up for 5 minutes as an Inspector who just cannot stop laughing .
Scenes are liberally lifted from IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT , CHORI CHORI (1956) , DIL HAI KE MAANTA NAHIN (1991) and DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE (1995) and David Dhawan’s own film HERO NO.1(1996) . But Salman is no Raj Kapoor or Govinda or Aamir Khan or Shahrukh Khan in comic department . I will mention 2 corny scenes :
1 . Salman tells Karishma , “Agar Lift Lena Itna Asaan Hota , Toh Duniya Ke Saare Ladke Ladkiyaan Ghumaate” (if hitchhiking was that easy , all the guys would have loved to take the girls for a ride) . The same line is also spoken by Aamir Khan in DIL HAI KE MAANTA NAHIN (1991) .
2 . Johnny Lever is lying in hospital after being beaten up by Om Puri . Salman tells him , “You are not just my friend , but my brother too . Hello brother” and Lever replies , “Don’t mention Hello Brother” . This is a direct reference to Salman’s flop film HELLO BROTHER (1999) which also featured Johnny Lever .
There are only 2 good points about the film : Harmeet Singh’s colourful photography and 3 good songs ( “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” , “Oh Mr. Raja” and “Dheere Dheere Chalna” ) by Himesh Reshammiya – Sudhakar Sharma duo .
But this alone cannot save a pathetic effort . This movie flopped big-time at the BO . Served it right .
